What Is Neurotherapy?

Neurotherapy, also called neurofeedback and electroencephalogram (EEG) biofeedback, is a drug-free treatment that helps people improve their brain function.

It's based on the idea that you can consciously alter the way your brain functions using real-time displays of your brain's electrical activity (known as brainwaves).

The goal of neurofeedback for ADHD or ANXIETY is to teach the patient to produce the brain-wave patterns associated with focus or reducing anxious feelings.

Who Can Benefit From Neurotherapy?

Neurotherapy can be used to improve a wide variety of symptoms in people of all ages. Neurotherapy can help improve anxiety, depression, stress, attention, insomnia, chronic pain, substance abuse, stress, headaches, trauma and brain injury.

Neurotherapy can improve functioning in people with developmental disorders such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, learning problems, and intellectual disabilities.

Neurotherapy can also be used to improve the peak performance of musicians, executives, and athletes.

Neurotherapy can target an imbalance of brain waves in specific regions of the brain by using positive reinforcement to help boost normal brain wave activity.

How It Works

Using advanced, science-based qEEG technology, we find out how well your brain is working and help create a customized, drug-free plan to help make it stronger and perform better... alleviating frustrating systems like ADHD & Anxiety.

Initial Assessment

Your comprehensive assessment includes brainwave analysis using qEEG technology, heart rate and breathing analysis, and other clinically validated diagnostic tests to paint a clear picture of what's going on in your brain.

Customized Program

Your unique brain map becomes our guide to designing a personalized program. Through positive reinforcement and repetition, neurofeedback sessions train your brain to function better and more efficiently.

Final Assessment

At Walker Therapy Services, seeing our clients improve is our #1 priority. At the completion of the program, we do another full assessment to allow for comparison of your results before, during and after the program.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

 What is neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive method of direct brain function training. It is a specific type of biofeedback, and is also called EEG Biofeedback. It uses electrodes (which act like tiny microphones) placed on the client's scalp to record the EEG, or brainwaves, and control auditory, visual, and/or tactile feedback which allows learning to take place. This operant learning initiates self-regulation, and enhances relaxation, both necessary components of good brain function.

Why have I not heard of neurofeedback before?

The modality of neurofeedback is still considered experimental by many, and is most often used as an intervention in counseling to enhance the treatment process. Individual counseling is also valuable in assisting clients in learning to cope appropriately with their new and improved functionality. As a learning tool for the brain, and often a natural alternative to medication, one example of neurofeedback training includes guiding the brain into various levels of relaxation by targeting, and training, alpha frequencies (in ratio to other brain frequencies such as beta, theta, and delta). This method frequently generates deeper levels of relaxation for the client causing improvements in psychological and physiological functioning.

Is neurofeedback equipment FDA approved? For what uses?

Not all neurofeedback equipment is registered with the FDA. However, the equipment we use (BrainMaster Technologies, Inc.) is registered with the FDA. Under the FDA guidelines, neurofeedback devices can be used for "stress reduction," and "relaxation." No other claims can be made regarding its use. The FDA may someday approve neurofeedback for treatment of psychiatric conditions.

 How does neurofeedback work?

Neurofeedback targets the underlying dysregulation in brain activity that can exacerbate, and sometimes cause, clinical symptoms. This influence may also encourage neurophysiological resilience with the induction of brain flexibility, relaxation, and a steadier central nervous system. For example, if one's state of neuroanatomy, and physiological health, is over-stimulated, or under-aroused, mental illnesses with various symptoms may manifest behaviorally, psychologically, emotionally, and/or physically. Such disorders as anxiety and depression may have a base in neurophysiology which consequently can be targeted for training. A brain with greater flexibility has the capacity to more healthily adapt to challenging life situations.

Do I feel anything? What does a neurofeedback session feel like?

During a session clients usually report feeling relaxed. Clients sit in a recliner and listen to sounds and/or play a video game on a computer screen using their brain to direct the action. When the desired brain wave state is achieved, the game continues and points are accumulated. It's easy and fun. Remember, nothing is being put into your brain. We are simply "listening" to your brain wave activity through sensors, much like a doctor listening to your heart with a stethoscope, and feeding the information back to you. For this reason, it is known as "Neurofeedback."

Is any electricity being put into my head?

No. No energy or electricity is put into your head. The equipment only "listens" to your brain waves.

Is neurofeedback only used for mental health issues?

Neurofeedback can also be used non-clinically for peak performance training, baseline data for sports players in case of head trauma/injury, certain sleep issues, and to track changes in brain function as a result of medication.

What equipment do you use that has such a significant effect?

We use BrainMaster Technologies' pioneering "database-driven" neurofeedback equipment, and the system is FDA registered.

How long do the results of neurofeedback last?

Results will generally last as long as positive mental, and emotional, environments and behaviors are maintained.

Walker Therapy Services

Team of Experts

Preston Walker, LMFT
FOUNDER

Mr. Walker stepped into the therapeutic world at 14 years old volunteering for local crisis lines. Since then, he has trained crisis workers, got a BS in Psychology, MS in Marriage and Family Therapy. He has become known in the community for Parts and Memory Therapy and for leading workshops for therapists to better treat those with anxiety, depression, PTSD, and dissociative disorders. He began his work in neurofeedback in 2014, where he noticed people getting through therapy about three times faster than without neurofeedback.

His passion for helping those who have made limited progress in previous therapy led him to take multiple classes and courses in neurofeedback. Preston Walker is trained in sLORETA neurofeedback, which is one of the most advanced types of neurofeedback available. He strongly believes in treating symptoms from multiple perspectives and utilizing multiple modalities of treatment to help people get better faster.

Rebekah Walker
NEUROFEEDBACK PROGRAM DIRECTOR

Rebekah Walker’s background is marriage and family human development, and is currently a graduate student studying psychophysiology from the one of the few universities that offer a degree in biofeedback in the United States. She is passionate about the mind body connection, and helping people feel better through various forms of biofeedback, including eeg biofeedback or neurofeedback. Mrs. Walker stepped into the biofeedback world in 2015, when she was trained and hired as a neurofeedback technician. Since then she has expanded her knowledge by taking multiple neurofeedback workshops and private mentoring, totaling over 100 specialized hours this summer alone. Her goal is to finish her PhD in psychophysiology and train clinicians in doing neurofeedback to help their clients.
